Poker Terms - Runt
The rather obscure poker poker term runt means a hand that ranks lower than a pair so is just a high card hand but to be more specific it’s a low high card hand. For example, after the river card has been dealt a player who is holding 4 5 offsuit with the board showing 2 3 K Q 8 has missed their straight draw and also failed to make a pair leaving them with just 5 high. This would be classed as a runt hand, it has none or virtually no chance of beating an opponents hand at showdown. In this situation that players only realistic way of winning the hand would be by making their opponent(s) fold by bluffing.
